Australian TGA seizes hundreds of potentially dangerous sport supplements from Sydney retail store

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) with the assistance of NSW Police have seized 478 sport supplements containing potentially dangerous substances from a Sydney retail store.

It is alleged that the supplements were intended for supply to consumers. Some of the supplements are alleged to contain substances which are banned from sale and supply in Australia due to their high risk to consumer health.

The seizures were made after the TGA and NSW Police executed search warrants at the Sydney retail store on 19 December 2023 as part of ongoing investigations into the alleged importation, manufacture, supply, and advertising of unapproved therapeutic goods.

In Australia, medicines and chemicals are classified into schedules in the Poisons Standard according to the level of regulatory control required to protect public health and safety. The labels promise miracles: Fast Weight Loss! Eliminates Hunger! Burns Calories!

Now new research highlights how hundreds of brands of dietary supplements deliver so much kick from a modest blend of vitamins and herbs. The answer is many labels leave out one important ingredient: a hidden payload of pharmaceutical drugs and experimental chemicals.

A new analysis of 10 years of FDA records reveals that from 2007 to 2016, almost 750 dietary supplements were found to be contaminated with secret doses of totally unregulated drugs, including prescription medicines, banned and unapproved chemicals, and designer steroids.

Over 20 percent of these offending products contained more than one unapproved drug ingredient, and numerous contained a cocktail of clandestine chemicals – in two cases, as many as six unlisted ingredients.

Consumers face health risks buying erectile dysfunction medicines online

Although this is specifically applicable to Australia, South African consumers are similarly at risk.

The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is asking consumers to consult with their doctor prior to purchasing medicines for erectile dysfunction from overseas websites. There are no safety, quality or efficacy guarantees for the medicines you purchase from overseas.
