Do magnesium creams, sprays and oils really work?

Posted 12 March 2018

From the highly trusted, ConsumerLab

Topical magnesium products such as MagPro, Fibro Flex and BetterYou are often promoted as easy, effective ways to get magnesium and to reduce muscle pain and cramps, improve flexibility, and promote relaxation and sleep. However, there is little reliable clinical evidence showing these products are effective and topical magnesium products may cause skin irritation, itching and rash. This is discussed in the Magnesium Creams, Sprays and Oils section of the Magnesium Supplements Review.

Be aware that some companies claim this irritation is a sign of magnesium deficiency, but this is not scientifically supported.

Magnesium absorbed through the skin?

Posted 14 November 2014

An advertisement in the UK claimed, among other:

“Under the heading “Why transdermal delivery?” the website stated “Transdermal delivery has been proven as the most effective method of supplementation outside of a hospital environment, increasing the body’s magnesium levels up to five times faster than oral supplementation. This means the positive effects of magnesium are felt faster”.”

A physician, laid a complaint with the UK ASA challenging whether:

1. the claims related to the transdermal absorption of magnesium were misleading and could be substantiated; and
2. in the context of a topically applied product, the efficacy claims were misleading and could be substantiated.

The UK ASA ruled against all the claims (not unsurprisingly!)

Body Detox

Posted 30 March 2012

The website, Body Detox, sells a number of unsubstantiated products – many with absolute false claims. For example, the site states:

  • “Most people are severely Magnesium deficient and are blissfully unaware of the health complications associated with Magnesium deficiency”,
  • “Most illnesses and disease including constant tiredness, headaches, bloatedness, allergies, sinusitis, eczema and poor concentration could all be due to toxins and parasites in the body”
  •  “Roll your sinusitis away”

Frankly most of the claims on the site are not possible, complies lies or simply figment of the seller’s imagination. They are based at 20 Lynburn Road, Lynnwood Ridge, Pretoria, cellphone 0861 263 933. Would you trust products coming from this address?
