Dangers of dietary supplements spotlighted

Michael White, a professor of pharmacy at the University of Connecticut, has summarized how consumers are endangered by the U.S. dietary supplement marketplace. The problems include (a) microbial contamination, (b) heavy metal contamination, (c) prescription drug adulteration, (d) herb substitutions, (e) added ingredients to herbal products, and (f) inaccurate labeling of ingredient dosages. He blames the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, which allows supplement and herbal products to be marketed without providing proof of their quality to the Food and Drug Administration. Scott Gavura, a pharmacist, has posted an excellent article on his blog ‘Science-Based Pharmacy’, in prompted by an article titled “Should states and local governments regulate dietary supplements?” published in the journal, Drug Testing and Analysis. (abstract reproduced below)

He writes:

“The idea that “natural” products are safe and effective has been so effectively marketed to us that many don’t recognize it as a fallacy. Much of the supplement industry is built around an appeal to nature. Supplements are described as natural, gentle, and “holistic”. Medicine, especially prescription drugs, is the opposite. They’re “chemicals”. They’re risky and dangerous – just look at that list of side effects!”.

“The nutritional supplement industry is big. Real big. Like $32 billion a year big, according to Forbes Magazine. And that amount, says Forbes, is expected to double by 2021. That’s a lot of vitamins. In fact, almost half of the U.S. population takes vitamins. Must be good for what ails you, right? Well, maybe not. Those billions of dollars go very far to enrich the supplement industry, but according to numerous scientific studies, virtually nowhere to enrich your health. In fact, because your body excretes out many of the vitamins it can’t use, you might say you are literally flushing that money right down the toilet.”
